How to pack for a sea kayaking trip and items needed for
an Alaska Sea Kayakers guided day trip

We will paddle, rain or shine. All paddlers should bring:

1. Rain gear and rain hat
2. Water bottle
3. Sunglasses and sunscreen
4. Wear (or bring) layers of clothing (synthetic fabrics; fleece, capilene, and polypropylene are best) to be comfortable in temperatures ranging from 40-70 degrees. Cotton clothing is inappropriate to our temperate rainforest environment.
5. Camera (if you can't afford to lose it, don't bring it)
6. Kittiwake paddlers (our 3 hour trip) should wear comfortable shoes (sandals, sneakers) as rubber boots will not be issued.

Alaska Sea Kayakers will supply:

1. Dry suit upon request
2. Appropriate footgear
3. Rubber gloves (when required)
4. Dry bag for camera (and additional clothing, when required)

General information:

All trips will require light to moderate exercise.

Whittier can be accessed by car through a one-way toll tunnel ($12 for cars).
Inbound openings are on the half hour, for fifteen minutes. First inbound opening is at 6:30 AM, and the last inbound opening is at 10:30 PM.
Outbound openings are on the hour, for fifteen minutes. First outbound opening is 6 AM, and the last outbound opening is at 10 PM.
There are some mid-day variations to this schedule, to accommodate rail traffic. Please call us to discuss this schedule, if planning a mid-day entrance.
Allow 1 hour and 15 minutes to drive from Anchorage to the tunnel entrance.

See our "Links" page for the summer tunnel schedule.

For those trips offering lunch (Passage Canal, Shotgun Cove, Blackstone Bay) our typical menu includes smoked salmon, pasta salad, cut fruit and vegetables, cheese, grain bread, assorted spreads and condiments, hot drinks (tea and cocoa), and snacks on the water. Please advise any special needs.

We will paddle rain or shine, but, high winds can keep us off of the water. On the day of your tour, call (877) 472-2534, toll free, to check weather and discuss options, if conditions are poor. (Except: Blackstone Bay trips; we will debark, regardless of weather. In the rare event that Blackstone's protected bay is not safe to paddle, we will return to Whittier and offer to reschedule, or refund in full.)
